– The rich and storied heritage of St. Maarten will be the focus of Philipsburg Jubilee Library’s Heritage Week, themed “T’iz we own ting”. This series of activities, set for November 4 to 9, will serve as a precursor to the island wide celebrations of St. Maarten/St. Martin Day.

Heritage Week was developed by the library to showcase various aspects of heritage through informative and interactive activities. The activities will all be built around the library’s core goal of education as a fundamental pillar for the community. “We want residents and visitors to rediscover, discover and share the many wonders of our 37-square-miles of paradise. Heritage is a great connecter of people. Shared history helps to foster a share vision from the future. And, differences allow us to build bridges to common ground,” said PJL. Heritage Week will feature cultural dances, spoken word poetry, a digital photography exhibition, trivia, workshops and presentations on traditional St. Maarten and Caribbean music, traditional drinks and finger foods, cultural wear and books about local heritage. The Department of Culture is partnering with PJL on the week of activities. PJL encourages the entire community, in particular parents and children, to be part of Heritage Week to celebrate St. Maarten’s unique heritage. PJL is working together with its partners St. Maarten Heritage Foundation (the museum) and the St. Maarten Archaeological Centre SIMARC in the preservation of St. Maarten’s heritage and culture. The PJL board looks forward to have a joint housing in the planned national cultural heritage center.
