Joycelyn R. Hanley was born on the Island of Nevis and has made St. Maarten her home.
At a young age, I had a profound passion for the art of poetry.
Legacy reads featuring Joycelyn R. Hanley
In following my passion, I tried my hand at writing numerous poems and short plays. Participated in many cultural performances and acted in many plays. Also took part in many reading programs at the elementary schools on the island of St. Maarten. As a youth leader, I wrote many poems and short plays for my Youth group for Easter and Christmas programs.

My opportunity for grand exposure came in November 2015, attending and participating in the 18th ANNUAL EASTERN CARIBBEAN ISLAND CULTURES (“ISLANDS IN BETWEEN”) CONFERENCE ON THE LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURES OF THE EASTERN. CARIBBEAN conference. With grace and poise, I recited my poem, entitled: “Remove the Rubbles and Rise”.

The poetry enthusiasts in attendance honored my presentation with a standing ovation and yelled for an encore. I was encouraged to pursue my writing. In 2019 my book of heartfelt poems entitled “Book Beneath the Surface”, was launched.
