The Sint Maarten Library proudly continues its Passing on Our Legacy Black History Month 2026 observance with an exclusive and inspiring interview featuring distinguished educator Edna J. Rijkaard. In conversation with media strategist, creative producer, and filmmaker Sjorensly Valies, the discussion highlights Rijkaard’s remarkable educational journey, her lifelong service to the community, and reflections on influential figures from the African Diaspora and Sint Maarten.
This interview marks the fifth and final installment of the Library’s 2026 Black History Month Literary Figures Series—an important initiative dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and amplifying the voices and contributions of cultural and educational leaders within our community and the wider African Diaspora.
Celebrating a Lifetime of Educational Leadership, Edna J. Rijkaard is a retired Dutch and Biology educator whose career spans over 40 years across Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. After beginning her teaching career in Suriname and working in Bonaire, she became a key figure in secondary education in St. Maarten, teaching at Milton Peters Mavo (now Milton Peters College TKL) and The Sundial School, where she later served as Assistant Principal.
Beyond the classroom, she contributed to regional education through NACSI, leading training programs and teaching Dutch to police cadets. Honored with a Royal commendation in 2014, she continues to serve the community as an exam invigilator, Assistant Preacher, and advocate for lifelong learning. In a dynamic conversation led by Sjorensly Valies, is a Creative Director and Lead Editor of Great Bay Media. As a filmmaker, producer, and media strategist, Valies has played an integral role in strengthening community-based storytelling and journalism on St. Maarten.
Through his leadership in television production, daily news broadcasting, and digital storytelling, he continues to bridge generational gaps by delivering reliable, locally relevant programming. His work emphasizes youth development, media innovation, and expanding access to creative training opportunities through initiatives such as the Great Bay Media Lab.
This thoughtful exchange between Rijkaard and Valies offers viewers not only a retrospective on a life of service but also a forward-looking perspective on education, mentorship, and cultural preservation in 2026 and beyond.
Continuing the Conversation: Youth Literacy & Engagement Program As part of this year’s expanded Black History Month programming, the Sint Maarten Library also invites the public to tune in to the Youth Literacy and Engagement Program taking place Saturday, February 28, 2026.
This important initiative actively engages young people in critical discussions surrounding social issues, civic responsibility, and cultural identity. Participants will reflect on and analyze After the Storm by local author Tamara Groeneveldt, with special focus on the poem “Walls.” The discussion will be led by Janealy Reenis-Leonard (MPC – VWO Department), alongside guest speakers; Erwin Romney of One SXM Association, and Mandisa Young (MPC – HAVO Department).
Through guided dialogue and critical analysis, the program encourages youth to examine contemporary social challenges, build empathy, and develop their voices as informed and engaged citizens. The Library emphasizes that youth engagement remains a cornerstone of its 2026 programming, reinforcing the importance of literacy not only as an academic skill but as a tool for empowerment and social transformation.
Looking Ahead, The Sint Maarten Library extends sincere gratitude to the community for its continued support and engagement throughout Black History Month 2026. The Passing on Our Legacy series reaffirms the Library’s commitment to documenting and celebrating the individuals who have shaped our cultural and educational landscape.
As this year’s series concludes, the Library looks forward to 2027 and the next chapter in honoring those who continue to inspire, lead, and uplift our community. For more information and to view the full interview series, please follow the Sint Maarten Library’s official communication channels.
